Minneapolis Hyatt Hosts $55,000 National Championships

The Inside Foos Productions crew hit the road once again during the month of July, this time headed for America's upper midwest and the state of  Minnesota for the 2003 U.S.T.S.A. National Championships. The Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Minneapolis was the luxurious host for this $55,000 event as the pro tour returned to the twin cities for the first time since the 1998 U.S.Open. As always, Engineer Ezekiel "Iceman" Moore, Co-Producer Christina Fuchs and I were stationed just inches away from all of the National Championship action, covering the event and documenting it for posterity. In fact, now that we have gone fully digital and can offer our videos in the durable DVD Video format, foosball players and fans can sit down 100 years from now and watch the excitement of early 21st century foosball as if it were recorded the day before.

>From my comfortable perch high above the sidelines in the National Championship pit, I had the opportunity to watch (and comment on) some of the best matches and performances of the 2003 season. I saw 18 year old Billy (the Kid) Pappas put on an unbelievable display of offensive foosball as he earned his highest open finish ever in the singles event. I also had a chance to again watch the steady maturation process of another talented teenager, Tony (the Tiger) Spredeman.

I saw something in the Open Singles final that I had never seen before as the amazing Loffredo had the rug pulled out from under him by the world's top-rated player, Rob Mares. Of course Todd turned that around with a devastating all-out performance against Adrian Zamora in the Masters Singles final.

It was fun watching old friend Steve Rogge, a Massachusetts Semi pro player, live the dream of non-professional foosball players everywhere, as he teamed with Louis Cartwright to knock-off several higher seeded teams and finish in third place. I also enjoyed the emergence of another very talented New England fooser, Mike Philbrook, who played in three finals, including Open Doubles. And it was, of course, extremely satisfying watching my partner (in business and life) Christina Fuchs return to form with a brilliant Mixed Doubles effort with partner Adrian Zamora as they claimed their first U.S.T.S.A. title together.

Open Doubles champs Dave Gummeson and Tracy McMillin, two of the classiest guys on the tour, also put on an entertaining show, overpowering opponents en route to their first open title together. These two true gentlemen have been knocking on the door for several years and it was nice to see them emphatically knock down that door and win the National Championship in true sportsmanlike fashion. Watch out for this duo in Dallas!

On a video note, I am currently in the process of post-producing the Nationals footage, attempting to edit down to the best six hours of action, and should be ready to begin shipping in about 2 weeks. If you haven't yet ordered you can go to http://www.insidefoos.com to own the National Championships on DVD or VHS.

The 2003 Nationals DVDs will feature all of the best action from the recent Minneapolis event, including young Mr. Pappas's run through the singles event, Mike Philbrook's eye-opening offensive performance in doubles, and the classic Open Singles final between Mares and Loffredo. Other featured matches on the DVD set include names like Park, Perrie, Sipiora, Cartwright, Archer, Moreland, Donovan, Zamora, Yore, Diaz and of course Open Doubles winners Gummeson and McMillin. Former 1980s world champs Tony Bacon and Don Chalifoux also make a rare appearance on the six-hour long Nationals video.

Looking ahead, the summer is shaping up as a busy one with Mary Moore's $15,000 Kentucky State Championships and, of course, the $135,000 World Championships now both just weeks away. There are also several state and regional events on the schedule (see below) as the 2003 season heads into the stretch run.

Congratulations to all of the new 2003 national champions...

INSIDE THE PRO TOUR...

Cleaning out the Nationals notebook...

Todd Loffredo's performances in the two big singles events were truly extraordinary...

He put on a clinic against Zamora in the Masters Singles final, and seemed headed for a double scoop in Open Singles until Rob Mares pulled-off his superhuman comeback...

Rob appeared headed for defeat, falling behind 4-1 in the fifth and final game, until he put two in from goal and blocked 4 potential match-winning shots from Loffredo's legendary 3-rod...

Todd's impressive victory in the Masters final was the 23rd major singles title of his career and made him the first three-time champ of that competitve, pro-only event...

Amazingly, Loffredo has not won the Open Singles title at the World Championships since 1986...

He has however won a remarkable eleven World Open Doubles titles in that same span...

Dave Gummeson and Tracy McMillin simply overpowered the competition in their Open Doubles victory...

Dave, utilizing his consistent and versatile 5-rod and powerful pull-shot, and Tracy, whose defense has caught up with his formidable offensive
2-row, seemed to get better and better as the weekend rolled on...

Tracy also showcased his forward skills on several occasions, including the tournament's final point...

Gummy's brush-pass seemed better than ever, and when you combine that with his incomparable lane/wall passing series, you have one of the pro tour's truly unstoppable fives...

The 2003 National champs have also proven to be among Collignon and Loffredo's toughest competitors at the World Championships...

Two years ago in Dallas, Dave and Tracy beat the five-time defending champs in the winner's bracket, but lost 5-4 in the fifth game of the loser's bracket final, as Frederic and Todd went on to win their third straight world title...

Partner Update 1: Two-time world finalists Louis Cartwright and Trevor Park are reuniting for the worlds in hopes of turning around their two doubles defeats to Todd and "Rico"....

Trevor and Lou were defeated in the Worlds Open Doubles final in the year 2000, and then took Loffredo and Collignon down to the final ball in what is generally recognized as the greatest match of recent years...

Partner Update 2: In another very intriguing pairing, top-rated Rob Mares will team with second-ranked Terry Moore at this year's  worlds, as they also try to end the five year reign of the current champs...

With Terry's phenomonal forward skills and Rob's tremendous defense and switching abilities, this team has as good a chance as any to dethrone the five-time titlists...

Trivia Time: Who was the first player to win both the Masters Singles and World Singles championships in the same year?

Boston's Billy Pappas was spectacular in Open Singles, scoring well with his dancing roll-over snake shot, while hitting some of the best shots we've ever seen from his explosive 2-rod...

Billy dominated both Thor (The Hammer) Donovan and two-time world finalist Trevor Park, sweeping them each in three straight games...

Pappas burst onto the scene back in 1995 when he won the Rookie Singles competition at the U.S. Open at the age of nine, after losing his first match, in field of more than 200 players...

The state of Massachusetts had its best tournament ever, with Mike Philbrook, Steve Rogge and Pappas all having career weekends...

Philbrook finished second in both Open Doubles with Gregg Perrie, and Pro Doubles with Steve Tellas, and displayed the kind of superior forward skills that we always knew he had...

Philbrook also won the Pro/Pro Master DYP with talented Floridian Adam Horowitz...

Mike's lateral speed and quick release on his snake shot make him a real challenge to keep out of the goal...

Louis Cartwright's partner and friend Steve Rogge, a semi pro player, played well above his rating in helping his team to several notable Open Doubles victories and a third place result...

Steve, the founder of the New England Foosball Association, won the World Rookie Singles title way back in 1992...

Tony Spredeman had another solid weekend in Downtown Minneapolis, winning Forward Shootout, finishing second in Mixed Doubles (with Becky Cherry), second in the Pro/Pro Master DYP (with Adil Hizoune), and seventh in Open Singles...

Spredeman's mixed partner Becky Cherry also won her second career Tornado title, pairing with 1998 U.S.Open Women's Singles champ Stayce Fowler to win the National doubles title...

Becky's only other title
on the Tornado tour came at the 2001 World Championships when she surprised the foosball world by winning Open Women's Doubles with Amy Fletcher...

The former Becky "Spillman" earned several tour titles during her run as a Master player on the Tournament Soccer pro tour back in the late 1970s. ..

Another Tony, Tony Bacon, gave us yet another glimpse into the sport's past with a solid fifth place effort in Open Doubles with longtime partner Don Chalifoux...

Bacon was one of the game's biggest stars in the 1980s, a decade which saw him win six World Championship titles on the Dynamo tour...

Seven year old Alex Pipkin may be the youngest player to ever win on the U.S.T.S.A. tour after his !7 and Under Doubles win with older brother Jeff Jr., who is 13....

Young Alex scored three clean points from goal in the final deciding game to lead his team to the title...

British Columbia's Moya Tielens continued her red-hot run, winning Women's Singles in Minneapolis, her eighth victory in the last five major tour events...

Adrian Zamora and Inside Foos' very own Christina Fuchs played outstanding foosball on the way to their first U.S.T.S.A. title together...

Zamora's weekend also included the 2nd place result in Masters Singles, and a win in the State DYP with fellow Californian Robert So...

Adrian has been sensational over the past year and a half, notching five top-3 open finishes in his past four major events, including two wins and two 2nd place results...

In other results, Washington semi pro Kevin Munro powered his way to a second career Goalie War title at the Nationals, while our very good friend Brad Anderson won the National 35 and Over Doubles title with veteran pro master Steve Mohs...

It was another well-run event in Minneapolis with all of the major competitions finishing by 9:00 pm...

Cudos to David Radack, Ben Kennon, Steve Murray, Dave, Gregg, Judy, the Richards (Wight and Hall) and the rest of the crew for a job well done...

The early finish allowed many of the worn-out players the chance to enjoy a dinner upstairs at Manny's Steakhouse, home to a tremendous fillet and absolutely the best cheesecake this reporter has ever tasted...

Trivia Answer: Louis Cartwright in 1996. Terry Moore (1998) and Frederic Collignon (2002) have since gone on to duplicate this very difficult double...
