USTSA RELEASES 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
The 2005 World Championship Flyer has been released and is
now available for viewing at http://www.vifa.com. This yearıs event will once
again be held over Labor Day weekend (August 31-September 5) at the DFW Hyatt
Regency Hotel at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Players of all ratings classes will
compete for up to $150,000 in cash and prizes (based on full Championship Event
fields and money added). I have covered some of the highlights of the upcoming
worlds event below. There are also a few enhancements and changes that have been
announced since the release of the Worlds flyer.
-There Are Now Five Play Levels: Amateur, Semi Pro, Pro, Open, and
Championship. There will be Doubles and Singles held in each of the above
categories, along with Amateur, Semi Pro and Open Mixed Doubles events. Womenıs
events will feature Amateur and Open Doubles and Singles. Everyone can compete
in the Open Events, while the other levels are restricted to that rank or below.
Players can purchase either their rank package or any one higher and can also
add-on other events on a single entry basis.
-There are Four Different Package Deals Available to Both Men and Women (Am,
SP, Pro, PM). Remember, you can purchase either your rankingıs package or any
one higher. Each Package deal (except Women's AM and SP) includes that rankıs
events AND Open Doubles and Open Singles. In other words, an Amateur player
could purchase the Amateur deal and play Amateur Singles, Doubles and Mixed,
along with Open Doubles and Singles. Or, that same Amateur could buy the Semi
Pro or Pro package and play those events and Open. This also opens the door for
an Amateur player to play with a Pro, if they wished, in the Pro and Open
events. All events will be seeded.
UPDATE: In addition to playing in the various
package-included events, players will also be allowed to buy into the events of
the ratings above on a single event basis. For example, an Amateur package
purchaser can also buy into Semi Pro or Pro events if they wish. A Semi Pro can
buy into Pro. Individual entry fees will be $50 for Amateurs to play Semi Pro
and $75 for Semi Pros in Pro. Amateur and Semi Pro women can also buy into their
rating's regular Singles or Doubles event or one above for a regular Am or SP
entry fee.
-Package Deals Can Now be Purchased Online Using a Credit Card. Ordering
capabilities should be up and available shortly at http://www.vifa.com. Credit
card acceptance should simplify the registration process and make it easier to
get signed up in plenty of time. If you pre order your Package Deal by August
18, you will not only save more than 20% on single event costs and table fee,
but you will also receive a free Inside Foos DVD and a selection of fine hair
products from the Paul Mitchell people.
-The Big Money (Potentially REAL big) Championship Events. These are the
³put your money where your mouth is² biggest events of the World Championship
weekend. If youıve got the guts and desire to compete against the Big Dogs for
the Big Money, put up your $300 and go at it!
Championship Singles and Championship Doubles are the weekendıs elite events
and are open to anyone of any ranking who wants to pay the $300 entry. These
events will be 100% payback plus $100 per team added in Doubles, and $50 added
per player to the Singles pot. The finals of these Championship events will be
on Monday, the tournamentıs final day, and will be showcased with player
intros, music, prize giveaways, and all the pomp and circumstance that these
celebrated final matches deserve.
I have included below newly-released sample breakdowns for the Championship
events based on 32 and 64 players/teams. The breakdowns are designed to pay out
50% (1/2) of the field with the bottom rung of the breakdown winning back their
$300 entry fee in prize money. The Championship event breakdowns listed below
are official. The breakdowns listed on the tournament flyer, in Table Talk
Magazine, and on the website have been updated and are are no longer accurate.
Using this adjusted payout method, half of the playing field will win at least
their entry fee back in prize money. The first, second, and third place payouts
have been reduced from the original Worlds flyer, but the middle and bottom of
the breakdown have been increased substantially. All payouts are guaranteed on
the following full fields:
If the Championship fields are smaller (or larger) just subtract (or add) $350
per player to determine the total payout.
NOTE: The prize money in all other (non-Championship) events will be paid as
listed on the flyer and is guaranteed.
Based on turnout, prize money may be increased in many events.
QUESTION:³Whatıs the difference between the Championship and Open
events?²
All Menıs and Pro & PM Womenıs Package Deal purchasers (and single-entry
players) will compete in Open Doubles and Open Singles, allowing just about
everyone the chance to compete against just about everyone else. This ³open-to-everyone²
event also follows ITSF guidelines for qualifiers wishing to win all-expense
trips to Europe for the ITSF World Series Playoff later this year. (See Larry ³Euro-foosin²
Davisı article in the recent Table Talk magazine for more information on this
ongoing points race)
Meanwhile, The Championship Events will probably feature mostly Pro and Pro
Master players, along with some hungry, upwardly-mobile foosaholics who wish to
get big-time experience by playing in a ³major league² type atmosphere. This
event should provide a big payout to the top finishers, while offering half the
field the chance to win at least their money back.
-Team Names Return to the Pro Tour. Back in the sportıs heyday (the
1970s) inventing individual team names was a commonly accepted practice in the
championship events. They represented an entertaining and motivating way to
express your teamıs personality while also opening the door for potential team
sponsorship. ³Woops...Sorry! How Sweet it is!², ³California Dreaminı²,
"Rocket Launcher", "Baron Von Banker", and ³Hash Jeans² (Wiswell
and Furryıs sponsor) were just a few of the imaginative monikers. (My favorite
³Suck My Dink² never quite made it past the censors)
Anyway, beginning with the Championship Events at the upcoming Worlds, team
names will again be accepted instead of the usual name/name signup format. This
new enhancement should also make it somewhat easier to line up a potential team
sponsor: You can sell them by saying,³Weıll put your companyıs name on our
shirts and hats, and ³Team Foos Palace #1² will be announced to hundreds of
future customers several times each day², or something like that...
-The 2005 Worlds will also feature an all new $5000 true Pro/Am Event. Pro
Masters must play with an Amateur, Pros with an Amateur or Semi Pro. Most top
Pro Masters simply had too many ratings points to play in the old 3500 Limited
events so this new format now makes it possible for up-and-coming Amateurs
to play with some of the sportıs truly elite players.
-There will also be lights over every table, lots of 17-and-Under events, and a
variety of Mini Tournaments held from 1:00-10:00 each day for players who are
out of other events.
-There will be a $10 Table fee for non-package players who compete on a single
event basis.
Hopefully this tackles the main points. I will do my best to address your
questions and comments at the email address and phone numbers listed below.

RED HOTPAPPAS
WINS FIRST MAJOR TITLES AT CHICAGO NATIONALS For the first time
since 1983 the major professional tour returned to the city of Chicago, Illinois
as the USTSA presented the annual National Foosball Championships this past July
4th weekend. There were plenty of sparkling performances and foosball fireworks
in the ³Windy City², but no one burned brighter than 20-year-old Billy Pappas,
whose explosive play led to wins in all three major events in yet another
eye-opening performance by the young star out of Boston, Mass.
Billy claimed the Mixed Doubles title with first-time winner Melissa Kegg, won
the Championship Singles final in a showdown with Terry Moore, and added the
Championship Doubles title playing with Trevor Park, who also finally earned his
first major title. Pappas didnıt lose a single match in any of the three main
events, and became the first player since Todd Loffredo in 1993 to accomplish a
true ³triple² (Doubles, Singles, Mixed) at the annual National Championships.
Pappas, who reached a major tour final at all three 2004 events and has won
nearly every regional title over the past six months, teamed with rising star
Melissa Kegg to defeat Steve Mohs and Tiffany Moore in the Mixed Doubles final
and win his first-ever major tour title. The win also represented the first
career open victory for Kegg, who had previously reached the final with Pappas
at last yearıs Worlds in Dallas.
In Championship Singles, Pappas defeated Ron Sipiora in the round of 16, and
second -rated Rob Mares to reach the semi finals, and then outlasted Terry Moore
in one of the yearıs best matches to earn a slot in his fourth career major
final. In that match, Pappas trailed 4-3 in the fifth before fighting back with
the final two points to win the winnerıs side of the doubles bracket.
On the loserıs side, Nathan Winter worked his way back into the championship
mix after an early round loss to Texan Ronnie Joyner. Winter, one of the tourıs
most gifted performers, defeated Ron Sipiora, Tom Yore, Gregg Perrie, and Rob
Mares before running into Moore, who defeated him in three games to earn a
second shot at the red hot Mr. Pappas.
In the final, Pappas controlled the match throughout and defeated the
overmatched Moore in three games, 5-3, 5-3, and 5-3, to win his second title of
the day in a truly outstanding singles performance.
Californian Trevor Park had also been a pretty regular visitor to major
championship open finals over the past half-decade. Entering the 2005 Nationals,
Park had appeared in seven different major finals during his seven year pro
career, including Open Doubles World Championship matches in 2001, 2002, and
2004 with Louis Cartwright, without yet having broken through to the winnerıs
circle.
With Billy Pappas continuing to play at the peak of his game, and with the
highly-skilled Park aggressively manning the goalie rods, these two talented Pro
Master players dominated the winnerıs bracket, defeating Steve and Gena Murray,
Matt Steward and Terry Rue, and Steve Mohs and Brandon Moreland, who had beaten
pre-tournament favorites Terry Moore and Todd Loffredo in a semifinal match, to
reach the final in very impressive fashion.
In the loserıs bracket, Moore and Loffredo, who have a combined total of more
than 110 career major titles, began to fight their way back into contention.
Terry and Todd narrowly defeated Rob Mares and Gregg Perrie in a five game
nail-biter, and then overcame the efforts of Tom Yore and Eddy Gartman, also in
five very hard-fought games.
Terry and Todd then completed their comeback to the finals by avenging the
earlier loss to Mohs and Moreland with a four game win in the loserıs bracket
final. The two all-time greats defeated Steve and Brandon 5-4, 5-2, 2-5, and 5-2
to earn a showdown with Pappas and Park for the National title.
In the Championship Doubles final, Pappas and Park continued their march through
the event by winning game one 5-3, and then coming from behind to steal the
second game, 5-4, against Moore and Loffredo. With Loffredo moving to the
forward position, Terry and Todd fought back to win the next two games, 5-3 and
5-3, to tie the match at two games each. But Pappas and Park dominated the fifth
game, winning 5-2, to win the 2005 national doubles title.
The win gave the amazing Pappas, who also tripled at the recent Texas State
event, three titles on the day, the first three of his career. Trevor Park also
finally earned his first career open championship in his eighth attempt. Look
for Billy and Trevor to be among the early favorites for World Championship
honors as well.
Moya Tielens continued her assault on the record books in Chicago, adding two
more titles to her growing list of major championship wins. Moya teamed with
2004 National Mixed Doubles Champion Tommie Bagley of Colorado to hold-off the
hard charging Stayce Fowler and Becky Cherry, who won the first set of the
finals before falling short to Tielens and Bagley in a tough second set. Tielens
then proceeded to win the Womenıs Singles championship in a two set final
against Dusty Bambanek. The win made it four years in a row that the talented
Tielens had won the National Womenıs Singles title.
Also at this yearıs National Championships, Colorado superstar Rob Mares became
only the second three-time winner of the Masters Singles title, winning a
closely-contested match against the other triple-green-jacket winner Todd
Loffredo 5-4, 5-2, 2-5, and 5-4.
The pro tour now moves to Dallas, Texas, site of the 2005 World Championships
this August 31-September 5. Look for the young and uniquely talented Mr. Pappas
to have quite an impact on the annual Texas event.
NEW 6-HOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DVD SET IS AWESOME!
Despite the relatively small turnout in Chicago, the Championship events were
extremely exciting with many of the matches going down to the final game and
ball. The Pappas vs. Moore winner's bracket final in Championship Singles was
one of the best matches of the year. Steve Mohs' and Brandon Moreland's fifth
game come-from-behind win over Moore and Loffredo also deserves "top
match" consideration. You can go to http://www.insidefoos.com to order this
exciting midsummer classic which sells for just $45 for the 3-disc, 6 hour long
