I could use some advice
« on: January 15, 2008, 05:22:34 AM »
So in developing my pull shot up front I have hurt my wrist and hand by one night of stubbing the ball really hard. The problem being that now after about 10 mins of play my hand starts acting up again. Ive taken 2 months off (longest 2 months of my life) to rest my hand. It was fine for about a week but now its back again. This is a major problem in tournaments, cause well we all know how long they last. So about half way through the second and or third match my hand is feelin numb and I feel as if I cant snap the ball and lose most of my power. I really dont want to take another break, I feel it will hurt my game again.  I really like shooting my pull shot so it angles back (I've been told its a Texas style). I would really like to keep it this way and not really move over to shooting a square pull or a roll over. I am at a loss though. Ive tried icing and wrapping and well resting it. I dont know if anyone else has encountered this or knows of any way of fast healing.

Depending on where you live, and if there are any good pull shooters in your area,  have someone (experienced pull shooter) watch you shoot your pull shot.  From your description, I would suggest adjusting your stance first, so as not to have to relearn your pull stroke.  many times, a slight stance adjustment can relieve some of the pressure absorbed by your hand and wrist in the motion of the shot.  My guess is that the stroke is exerting too much pressure on your wrist and causing you to pinch something during the shot.  Another possible problem may lie in the lateral path of the ball during your stroke.  the ball is coming back just a little too much (like 1/8 of an inch too far behind the rod at the and of the lateral motion of the ball).  This can cause too much of a pinch on the ball, and subsequently too much stress on your wrist during the follow through of the stroke.

What area do you live in?  I may be able to provide a name of someone who can look at your shot and provide some more specific help for your shot.

Pat has some good advice for finding what is causing the pain to begin with but this won't fix the pain you already have

a couple of things
first, it will take a while to heal...you may want to see a doctor and have it xrayed to see if you are dealing with a break or just ligament/muscle issues

time to heal doens't mean don't play for 4-8 weeks but it means be real careful about what you do so you don't continue to injure or re-injure your wrist

as a pull shot shooter, you should learn to do a spray long and a squared off long in addition to your angle back...you should have a great straight which you can shoot at least 4 ways...you need lots of middles, angles, squared off, 2 hole, 3 hole, and 4 hole...you should be able to shoot most of all these options while rolling the ball into position

so, this is a good time to practice these and many other things...do your shooting with less power, try not to use your muscles, and study defenses and shoot with your mind not brute strength

also, this can be a great time to force yourself to practice more ball control because you can't get too much of that...you can learn to do something that doesn't require pushing your wrist - like tic tacs, palm rolls, etc

this can be a great time to discipline yourself to learn and do other things and in the mean time, do what Past said and have someone study your shot...

oh, and if you are stubbing the ball, just don't start with the ball so far back...keep inching it forward little by little until you stop stubbing and can still do your stroke

Not the best advice for everyone,  but I find my game is just as sharp when on a couple Vicodins or a Percocet,  so I'd consult a Doctor and see if you can't manage the pain while waiting for it to go away.

I have the same issue....my had gets really bad...i have an old injury that acts up that makes it even worse...the best thing i have found is learn to shoot it standing a bunch of different ways until you find one where you can still shoot it but it dosnt hurt as much...or at all...i also just found this forum where someone has put together a bunch of promaster advice and put it in one location...i think it is really cool check it out....

I use this thing call a Master Wrist 49

There is also this:

These will keep you from hyperextending your wrist when you shoot.  I often find that after 2 or 3 matches I can take it off and not hurt my wrist.
