How long to set up a shot.
« on: January 23, 2008, 08:30:15 AM »
I wonder,on average, how long it takes for a pattern to emerge or movements to slow on defense when faced with a moving pin shot set-up? 8 seconds, more? I think even the most aware will let down in some manner even if they don't realize it. A pin that is barely trembling but then makes a quick fake move will bring a reaction followed by a correction, do that 2 or 3 times and the reaction changes. We are right in the thick of foosball, what it boils down to, in talking about this.

as soon as I set up the ball sometimes a quick shot without hesitation can be a huge factor.  Ill even follow it up with the same thing and if they block it great....because the next time a few hard fakes will give me enough tells as to what theyre blocking an more times than not the thir shot is good...I can set my pin up pretty fast no retrys...who in here that shoots a pin once they get the ball stopped under the toe do they do the roll over of the man one more time before they start the rocking or shot?

I shoot a backpin open handed and sometimes i do shoot as soon as i get it to see if i can catch them off guard. It does open the goal. My problem is i need to NOT shoot it around the same time...Wait it out more often..11-14secs..When i do that...it's sweet....Wish i could do the rollover......I'm starting to practice it more now..for me i need to see results and for some reason it isn't working as i had hoped it would. I don't get the accuracy as i do with my backpin, so i stay with my bread and butter or go to my pull.    Any practice tips on the snake please let me know, anyone???? I do like to learn as well as giving advice.

Foos69 I'm about where you are in regards to the snake. It would help alot to play someone good at it so I could study them. I've gone on Youtube and watched but the quality is so poor that I don't get a good feel for the shot. I also like the back pin pull palm shot and like to compliment it with the wrist pin push and the wrist pin push kick from center to the far man angling in. Sometimes I'll do the palm back pin pull kick from center to close man angling in but it isn't as reliable  although really fast, stance  and starting position has to be right.

snake shot took me a while...but id have to say just work on the toss more than anything and just like with a pull start pulling around a guy directly in front of you or just to the side.....I learned a pull side first then the push.....You have to rmember haow hard and how long it took you to learn that backpin...I have tried and can't get it...so i stuck with the rollover....Sometimes it frustrates me when I cant get something but I have to tell myself practice and it will come around....gurantee it

69 are you an old TS player?  Most pack-pin guys are. It can be a challege to go from the back pin to front pin. If you didn't know the time limit is 15 seconds to shoot. We no longer have 2 different time limits for setting up and shooting.    Work on 2 things first.   Chipping to set the ball up is the first thing to master.  Sometimes at big tournaments when the balls are brand new and fuzzy, I play hell to set up a front pin for a roller.  I now will spend 30 min practace just setting the ball.   Like the last Worlds the center of the table was dished so the ball would want to roll  back towards the 5 when you had it on the 3 bar.  The second is creating lateral movement once you have it set up.  Its call walking the dog.  Go to http://www.Insidefoos.com and buy a set that has Billy Pappas or Tony Spreadman playing.  Work 1 hour each time you practice on setting the ball up and walking the dog.  The act of actually shooting is a relativly simple matter of spinning the rod to the tips of your fingers LOL.

Actually I am an old dynamo player back in the early 80's. The ts table had those fat grips I didn't like. The thinner handles did much better for me. I did play a few tournys on TS and did ok , but it didn't feel comfortable. So a local pool hall had a couple of dynamos and I loved them. I sometimes wish they were still around!!!!(in tournys)  The only thing I didn't like was the fact that after I'd play on them for abit the ball would get dents or nicks in them and it was not as much fun.  When tornado started to host all the big events I was bummed cause I had never played on tornados before and when I did start, it took me awhile to get used to the style of play. now I do like them and I shoot pretty much any shot but the snake. I'll play with it from time to time and even use it in a LOCAL tourny and score it but I'm not confident with it. Chance is right though, I have worked for a long time perfecting my backpin and it will take me time to do the snake. So I need to keep practicing. Thanks for the advice guys!!!

I guess i'm prejudicial. I'm guilty of lumping TS and brown top Dynamo players into one group. LOL

since i hurt the ole wrist ive laid off shooting altogether.....nothing but 5 bar about an hour a day lane- wall-lane-wall-wall fake-brush up- over and over and over....cant wait till i get off of work today......Also I think the injury is a blessing in disguise becasue i play alittle at work on a half ass table and have been shooting soft from the back as to not hurt the wrist......Been focusing more on subtle fakes and sprays nd its worked great......makes me think ive been trying to hit it too hard....cant wait till my wrist gets better,,......good luck with the practice on the snake 69...just toss it slow outside and shoot it slow.....you gotta crawl before you walk.....then speed that baby up in a few weeks and sprint....wont be long and youll be fast as lightning.
