Tornado cyclone vs. storm 2
« on: January 22, 2008, 09:12:12 PM »
I am looking into picking up a used tornado table for home use and would like some input.  Is the cyclone worth the extra 100-150 $ over a storm?

Save up some more and get a used coin-op. You will be glad that you did! I guarantee it!!!!

Input from a Storm II owner

I am not sure if you bought your table yet but here is my input.  My christmas present was a nice used Storm II.  I did the same comparison bewteen the Storm II and Cyclone II (checked everything - weight, bearings, feet, rods, balanced men, etc).  If you are looking at the tables that are a couple years old, the older Storm II has boot leveling feet where the newer one has the adjustable feet (the same as the Cyclone II).  That leaves two other differences which are bearings and rods.  I was fine with the snap in bearings vs. the split bearings (although the split will make maintenance much easier).  The rod wall thickness is a biggie (in fact I some how missed that when I was comparing the two, had I saw that I would have held out for the Cyclone).  The storm has the thinner rods.  So if your budget is Storm or Cyclone I would hold out to get the Cyclone.  The price ranges I have found on ebay and craigslist are:
$400-$500 Storm II
$500-$700 Cyclone II
$600-$850 Coin-Ops
If you plan to be competitive some day then (like the others typcially say) hold out for the coin op.
I plan to buy new 3 & 5 man rods with increased wall thickness ($120).  This will make mine play "basically" like a Cyclone.
The other thing I plan to do is add some weight to get a little closer to the Coin op feel (which both the Cyclone and Storm will need).  So you can see when you upgrade the rods on the Storm II you might as well get the Cyclone (it's like getting the split bearings for free).

Here's mine:
