DYP-Back Fired on OldMeister, Warrior and Tornado
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:40:34 PM »
Little Italy in Cornelius, Oregon had a great DYP last night. The only problem was OldMeister drew me as a partner. Anyone else he would have placed. Sorry about that.

There was talk about Warrior. I love my Grey Marble, but we may have to try Warrior also. It sounds like tournaments are starting to go that way....Any comments or advice on a Warrior purchase would be helpful, Year/Style.

MI state is starting this weekend.  Keep an eye on who wins the tables, then e-mail them, probably pick one up cheaper plus shipping.    There is not a coin op version, so you probably won't have one where you are holding your DYP's.   See if you can get a warrior ball and use it on your Tornado,  it will help some for practice.

only one to choose from if you can find someone selling them used because right now there are none to buy new

should be able to get one for $200-$300 (max)...you may need to shore things up here and there but the playing is much different...you can transfer 80%-90% of your Tornado game to Warrior in 30 minutes or less (literally) but that last 10%-20% takes some getting used to

the Warrior ball on Tornado will give you a good idea of what Warrior is like but can't really replicate some of that 10%-20% because Tornado has hollow rods which weight less and Warriors are solid

i found the biggest changes on the 2 bar if you have a finesse 2 with a variety of shots and angles

but even if you have a simple pull series, that long pull, heavy rod, lighter and stickier ball, takes some getting used to...after an entire weekend, I had maybe 70% of my complex 2 rod...my partner who shoots a hard pull series just went to a pull kick for the long pull so not as much an impact to him

you need both, look for people who already won their tables and you should get one for a song

Now hold on one second there Paul, I had fun last night and not once was I sorry I drew you for a partner, just the opposite. It's a lot of fun to play with someone so enthusiastic about the game as you are and also so willing to learn. You made some good shots and your use of the random defense was really good for someone who just had it explained to them. So don't put yourself down, we were cooking for a while and it felt good. That defense can be practiced somewhat at home by placing the opposing men and ball in the position of a roll over or pull and go at it for 15 seconds at a time so you feel confident about what you leave and what you take away. Relaxed muscles are the fastest(like that pull kick you did) and practice allows for that. I'll happily partner with you again buddy. Guys like you get a whole lot better fast. ;D

Thanks for the random defensive lessons OldMeister. I had a great time playing as your partner and learned a lot. I was trying the "no look" against the snake w/C-Boy. I need to relax. My random defense needs some refinement, but I can see how it works. Thanks again for making the trip and I look forward to hanging out again. Harold does a good job with the DYP.

Pablo.

Also, BBtuna, thanks for the reply. Once again, very informative.
