Rules about talking as a distraction

20.2 Talking between teammates while the ball is in play may be judged a distraction.

This is a very gray rule in the rulebook.

- I have people that think you can talk to your partner all you want as long as they dont do any forward progress within one second of that talking and you have possession of the ball.

- On the other side I have players that think any talking at all is illegal.

Is there a middle ground?

It's a judgment call. It's certainly more of an issue if there is talking going on as someone is shooting or passing versus if the ball is sitting still and not immediately put back into play.
