Dead Man
« on: January 18, 2008, 01:46:19 PM »
I have been training myself to shoot dead man pulls form the 3.  I started shooting around the middle dot and stretch it out further and further...when I get to half a man length from dead man I can slam it, but as soon as I set the d to dead rod, it seems to be mentally screwing me....I think its more mental than anything....anyone else have this problem when first starting the long pulls and any advice on tricks to not mind f*** themselves?  thanks a lot

if you are shooting a pull shot.......the defense is blocking with his closest man on the two....extend the two as far across the table as possible until the bumper touches the wall....Now hes dead cant go any further.... the idea is to shoot around that guy...very small amount of room left but can be a shot that is mastered... dead man or dead rod.......

Try setting up the 2 rod on the wall (deadman) and starting with the ball on the near side of the big dot. Work on getting your stroke just right and getting comfortable going all the way around . The end of the stroke is where people always have problems. People have issues shooting deadbar because the stroke has to come off the wall and hit the ball right away. Maybe it is mental for you but that last half inch is fundamentally different than a two dot.

If what you are saying, you can hit a deadbar long consistantly as long as no man is there, then I have a suggestion.  Shot a series of balls, mabe 3 or 4 long with no man, make sure you have the feel of the stroke, then put the man in place and set the ball up by hand, close your eyes and let it rip.  Once you own the shot and it is yours you will be able do it.   I have made alot of money gambling on no-eyes deadman shots  8)

Also, you can turn the man upside down to get use to looking at it.  But really, think about it, why would you want to shoot at a blocked hole?  It is better to shoot at an open hole and race the defender.  Place 1 finger between the bumper and sidewall and shoot at that hole.  Being able to instantaniously hit a 1 finger long will get you more wins.

there is no need to shoot a deadbar...
if you shoot it.... then you just picked the wrong hole.

worry less about shooting deadbars and work on picking and reading the correct holes...

That's the way I see it too Rios. Why try for the hardest shot on the table when easy ones are being offered all the time. Of course it is nice to know that you can hit it, you can give yourself a pat on the back for learning it.

finding anyone to come play defense when im training is tough...I set the d up on a lot of different hole combinations and reverse d setups to try and get as many looks as possible....I agree with you guys.  Picking the right hole is gonna be the key to getting to the next level for me I just wish there were tournaments here every day of the week......People just don't understand what kind of sport and the level of intensity and competition you can get on a foosball table.....I was a 3 sport athlete in high school...all state in 2 sports and was a punter/placekicker at a major division I college....FSU....won a national title.....I get as big of a thrill and adrenaline rush everytime i step up to a table to play...I can tell people how great of a sport this is but they think Im crazy......thank you guys for the info you provide.......

Keep after it.  Like I said, once you can do it with your eyes closed, it's yours.  I bet you could hit a fourty yarder with your eyes close?   I have beat alot of really good players on meat nut shooting deadman and there is no better feeling.  What a rush!

Old meister,

I would counter that deadman is difficult, but if someone is posting you, having the ability to hit a deadman means that you dont have to read any holes whatsoever. Not to mention, going around a deadman a few times will typically make the defense open up straight holes 8)

on another note for the past 3 weeks ive had bad pain just under the bone where some people hook the handle when they shoot a snake shot.  I hurt it working on long pulls from the back and it hasn't been right since.  Ive been laying off of pull shots..thank god i can shoot a snake....I know this as been a post on here before just recently....but I can't get it to heal for the life of me....I guess i need to just take off a week..but I really dont think I could bear it.....Guess nows the time to work on 5 bar passing.....I think i just answered myself.....anyone else ever hurt your wrist..feels like a tendon or something..Ed i ordered one of those magforce wraps...gonna give it a try...

Alaskan Thunder, I'm not saying a person shouldn't learn it if that is what they want to do. I did, I learn every shot I see. But Rios made a point that I agree with, read the defense and play the weaknesses. Maybe it is the difference in how much you trust your subconsciousness to react vs letting your conscious take over and being very deliberate. Two different approaches and types of play. I like to dance,,,
