Hi everyone, my name's Josh. I've been playing foosball for fun for the past 2-3 years, a friend of mine and myself have gotten fairly good compared to the people we've played(non-competitively). Anyways we're looking into joining some local events but while looking at the information we noticed some terms we didn't know the meanings of.. This is the site I was looking at

I'm wondering what DYP stands for. Also I'm having a tough time figuring out how much doubles events cost to enter(or if it's even listed). I don't get what the package deal is referring to. And on the table with the payouts the first rows I get but the lower rows listed as "M P S R" I don't know their definitions..

I feel like a complete idiot asking these questions, and if there is any link providing the information I would be happy to view it.

Josh DYP is Draw your partner. Package deal is refering to if you want to play all events (singles) (doubles) (mixed) (open) etc. they will give you a better price on the whole deal instead of paying each event seperately..

Without actually looking at the flyer, here is what I can tell you:

As earlier stated DYP = Draw your partner  (doubles event with partners randomly chosen and placed on the chart in no particular order)

Package deal also covered in above post

M P S R   These are VERY shortened versions of skill level ranking names

M = Master
P = Pro
S = Semi-pro
R = Rookie

Usually with an amount (entry fee) listed next to them.  This is the amount of the entry fees for that particular event, for that particular skill ranking

You guys would be considered "Rookie"

Feel free to ask any and all of these kinds of questions, and we will try to answer them all for you.

Oh ok, thanks so much everyone! You don't always have to dyp do you? For instance my buddy and I who play pretty often can enter a tournament together and be teammates, correct?

The DYP is just one event.  You do not have to play it.  The other doubles events are ones where you sign up with your partner.  If you are going to the tournament you referenced in your post (2007 Texas State Championships),  Just mention that your are new to the tournament scene when you go to register and they will be happy to help you out.

Awesome thanks alot! I'm not sure when the next tournament is..  Right now we play with some plastic balls.. Should I order cork, or another material..?

Plastic balls are fine (probably)

I would not use cork balls, unless you are playing on a table specifically designed for them (ie. Bonzini or Rene Peirre).

You might want to e-mail the guys (jim) at foosball.com and let them know what kind of table you have, and what kind of ball you are currently using.  Different balls are listed in the retail section of foosball.com.

Hmmm... typically the super slick rock hard plastic balls are NOT very good.

Then try the other links to specific balls used on higher end tables.

For starters... i'd say Try the Yellow Cork/Bonzini ball... and the Dynamo ball.... They are quite differnent from each other but both are generally much MORE playable than the super slick, practically impossible to pin slick ice cube plastic balls (oh - like the soccer ball looking foosball at this link!

Yeah I have the slick plain ones and one or two soccer balls that came with the table. I like them, but as stated it's nearly impossible to control them. I went ahead and ordered this http://foosdirect-store.stores.yahoo.net/deluxeballkit.html to get the best of all worlds!
