Great question. A fake is a "feint" as in boxing or fencing. As defined by Dictionary.com, "a movement made in order to decive an adversary; an attack aimed at one place or point merely as a distraction from the real place or point of attack...". I use fakes to "read" the D and then to move them out from where I want the ball to go through for a pass or shot. A good fake makes the D reveal their final positions. With this foreknowledge I can surely improve my percentages if the play is executed properly. Some examples of a fake are the reverses that go one way and then the other.
