Removing and installing playfield side strips...
« on: December 03, 2009, 04:26:33 PM »
Ok I finally purchased and received my new clear playfield side strips...not sure what I was expecting, but it is definitely different than what I envisioned they would be.  For some reason I thought they would be slightly thinner, clear versions of the older white strips...but the strips were really thin pieces of highly flexible clear plastic.

In any event, on to my question...What is the best way to remove the old thicker white playfield side strips, then prep and clear off the sticky residue and install the new clear playfield side strips???

I did this a few months and it came out perfect.

I very carefully took the point of a utility knife (Xacto knife would work, I guess) and worked it under the strip on one end being careful not to scratch the table.  Once it started to lift, I pulled the rest up with my fingers and it came off in one piece.  I did this for both side strips.

There was some residual glue left on the table, resembling clear caulking compound or plastic cement.  I tried to first rub it with rubbing alcohol but soon found that plain elbow grease worked the best.  Working an inch or two at a time, I would rub it with my finger until it rolled itself up into a ball and could be removed.  When I got all the glue up, I put some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and got rid of any leftover dirt/residue.

ONce it was cleaned up, I installed the clear side strips which went down with no problem.  Simply start peeling the end of a clear strip about 2-3 inches and stick it down square with the back and side wall.  Hold one finger down on the plastic and run it the length of the side strip while simultaneously peeling the backing.  It should go down perfectly flat and even with no bubbling.  All told, it took no more than 30 minutes for the whole thing.

Good Luck!
