Rod making clicking sound and not pushing/pulling loosely
« on: December 08, 2012, 02:27:49 AM »
Hi all, I just picked up a used table from a friend of mine and I had a question hoping that someone might be able to help with. One of the rods (defense) makes an awkward clicking sound and is obstructed at the same point when I push or pull. I looked at the rods and they seem fine to the naked eye. When I say it is obstructed, it's not so much that I can't push/pull it to release but rather it doesn't slide as easily as the other rods. What could possibly be causing this? Are there any methods I could use to fix it? Someone suggested oil, but this seems doubtful since the clicking/stick also results in the entire rod kinda skipping a bit, even the handle kinda jumps when I manually push/pull holding the rod/player. Hard to explain but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

John

Hi! thanks for the response. Although it is a promotional item (no obvious markings as to make) it looks like a Shelti. I was in a shop today and noticed that another brand had circular tube like rods (both) the rod that envelopes the other were the same, whereas mine has the squareish rod going over the circular rod when I push/pull. It makes the same knocking sound at precisely the same spot. I undid the rod by taking the screw (off the one side of the table) to check and see if it was at all bent, and it appeared fine. Don't know what could be causing the knocking click at the same spot every time. Hope this helps. Also, the players are not moulded onto the rods like what I saw on the table at the shop.

Are you talking about telescoping rods, an outer and inner rod? If so, Shelti is not a good description. Are the men plastic or aluminum? You might have a French table which has a completely different mechanism. What is a "squarish" rod? A picture might help. If it's a telescoping rod(could also be Garlando) then it could be a broken inner spring making that noise.

Hi Anderson, thanks for the response. Ok, so they are telescopic rods. What I meant by "squarish rods" is that they "the inner/outer" rods do not resemble eachother. The outer rods are larger and more box like (the corners are squared off) versus the inner rods that resemble the standard rounded rods (tube like). I'm going to try to post a picture. I did look under the table and it's marked S.D.G (made in China). If it's the spring, what suggestions would you make? replace it?

The most important thing to do is straighten the rods. The outer rod has a tendency to get bent, especially a 2-man rod. Straightening the rods takes the most practice. The spring isn't too important, just annoying. I don't know how to fix that, but you could disassemble the rod and see if the spring will fall out.
