PLANNED RANDOMNESS

Thats because the palm roll is more random and threatening and neither you nor they can count on where it is going to end up each time...i'm guessin

learn to shoot push and pulls with your wrist from goal...its ok to have a palm roll but it isn't nearly enough

until you can execute reasonably good push and/or pull people who know better will just follow you...it is likely you have a tell or two on top of it and you likely go on similar counts and to the same one or two spots

lower level players, beginners, rookies, am, are often hard to play because they are unpredictable - one pass it will just like they want and the next time they do it they mis-hit it and neither they nor the other player can plan a strategy because you can't count on them executing the same way consistantly

why do i bring this up, because as players get better and can count on executing what they want when they want, then strategy becomes more and more of a factor...so, a key goal is to create a game that is unpredictable but only to the other player...I call it "planned unpredictability" or “planned randomness”

this is important concept for you because it is the basis for clearing the ball…you want to shoot different holes, starting at different times, going at different speeds (different lateral and on goal speeds), and moving at different angles…sometimes you shoot at holes, some times you shoot at men, sometimes you shoot where a man is moving to and sometime shoot where the man is moving from…sometimes you quick shoot, sometimes go on 2-3 second count, sometimes on 13 seconds or everything in between…sometimes you study the defense possession after possession and wait until you see them repeat something and shoot the shot that fits that, sometimes you don’t look at the defense and shoot regardless of where their men are or are not…sometimes you just pick a count and a hole and almost close your eyes --- sometimes you do a rolling shot, or a reverse etc, etc, etc

I don’t know where you are at with your game development so this might be overwhelming but don’t let it phase you…learn the idea, embrace the principle and then start to learn it little by little….you will make lots of mistakes but you will start to have more and more success

When people start playing, they see foosball as a speed and power against speed and power and its not that way…learn to use your mind on the table…if all things are equal on the table, the better mind is going to win…on offense and defense it isn’t about speed, its about planning and positioning (especially defense) – caveat 1: speed isn’t nothing, speed is good but the game is not won or lost on speed alone – caveat 2: you can be too slow if you are regularly slow but I have never met anyone who was too slow to be effective…they may be too untrained and not getting the best speed they are capable of and this is usually the case in the scenario you have described

While you are learning this other stuff, to clear, you can plan to as random as possible, hit the edge of the ball and make it go on weird unpredictable angles just to get it out of the back…if you want to add some spank to it, do the palm roll…you can do this from a stand still or bump the ball toward you from the far man or vice versa in a straight line and come up with the other man and hit the ball on either side spraying it or whack it straight if they start over committing to try and catch the angle…do this all in one motion or catch up to the slow roll and hover over the ball sort of faking, like a brush pass, and then go one side or the other or straight

But, if you want to move past the whack angle clear, you need to work on the pull and/or push strokes so you can gain confidence and speed and execute Planned Randomness

I look at playing back as a playground. Every shot type I shouldn't do up front can be attempted in back with all the room in the world. Mix that in with some off the wall stuff and then some utterly basic shots like a simple pull towards you but go in front of the ball and then stroke it on the short side of the goal off speed. You  can play with everyone's mind from everywhere and from every placement on the table. I will clear the ball if my front man is killing them but if he isn't I will "play". I like scoring,,, If I try to clear I like to do it from the same position or use the same play set-up as my most effective shots. It helps in both respects as one frees up the other so it is worth practicing.
