Brad,

I'm looking forward to the tournament this weekend too. Especially since it will be my first. :) I was hoping you, or someone else could explain something to me.

I was thinking about doing the Beginner package for $80. Is that total cost to me? No other "hidden" fees? :) Also, it lists SD, SS, AD, AS, BD, BS. Can you explain those to me? Is that semi-pro double/singles, amateur singles/doubles and beginner singles/doubles? If that's the case it's probably too much for me. I know I don't stand any sort of chance in anything above Amateur and will likely get stomped on there too. :)

At any rate, other advice would be nice. Thanks.

Boscorillium,

If it's your first tournament then there is no such thing as too much! The more matches you play in a tournament environment, the more opportunity you have to learn more. If you go 2 and out in all you enter, you've still played 12 matches. If you surprise yourself and get a real taste of winning a few matches, that will fuel your drive to compete even more.

Go to the tournament, play in as many events as you can, find some better players to play some pick up games between matches and ask questions! Losing is a great motivator, if you love the game.

Boscorillium,

That is not the total, but the other fee is not hidden.

There are 2 fees, registration/table fee, and the entry fee.

The entry fee for all 6 events (total) is 80 bucks
the registration/table fee is $40

Total is 120 dollars  (that is an average of $20 per event, total)

Hope that explains it

Pat,

That does explain it and that was one of the questions I had. I thought the package would include that fee otherwise it seems less of a package to me but I guess in this sense it's a package of events and not an overall package.

Perhaps "hidden" was the wrong word to use. But to me a package is like, sign here, pay this amount and you're off to play. So while the $40 is listed on the page I think having packages that don't include that is misleading at best. That's just my opinion as an outsider. I'm sure after this it will be obvious to me that that fee is always separate.

This definitely changes my desire to play in as many events. As a beginner I'm pretty sure I don't want to shell out $120 and get creamed. In fact, I may just come and watch now. Save my money and practice some more between now and next year. Or I'll just enter beginner singles. I mean, $120 is 1/10 of the way to a really nice table which would arguably be a better investment at this stage than 12 games. :)

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

Even with the table fee added in, it is still a discount for all 6 events (total).  You should definitely come out and play, even if ot just pickup games!

Hope to see you this weekend,

Pat,

Thanks for the encouragement. I will definitely be there and I realized that if I pay the fee and play in just the matches I want then I can keep it under $100 which is definitely the goal. And more importantly I want to encourage the sport and events so I think I may have been approaching it with the wrong attitude at first. :)

See you there.

Tim

And one of the great things about this tournament, I read that Tony S will be giving a clinic!  That is a good reason to be there!  And it sounds like there will be plenty of other great players inattendance as well!

I saw he had confirmed he would be there on the Roll Call thread linked from the schedule. I didn't know about the clinic. Are there any other details about that or will we know Friday night? I will be staying with friends in B-more and coming and going Saturday and probably won't be able to come Sunday at all. Although, I guess if that's when his clinic was I would probably stick around. :)

I have not heard when it will be. I found the post on another forum where it said there will be a clininc, bu it didn't say when.

Here is the snippet from the other post:

Fireball USA welcomes you to the $15,000 Fireball US Open October 15-17 at the Holiday Inn in Timonium, Maryland.

- Featuring the 2010 1-Ball World Championships! Win a table!
- Events for players of all rankings and skill levels.
- New Fireball USA Pro Tour Model tables with the 3-man goalie.
- Women's events are free!
- Tournament Manager: John Lee
- Inside Foos will be in the house!
- Attend a clinic hosted by world champion Tony Spredeman!

I will try to find out more as we get closer to the tournament (yeah, I know, it is already close).

could explain something to me.

I was thinking about doing the Beginner package for $80. Is that total cost to me? No other "hidden" fees?

the $80 is the fee cost to play several events lumped into a fixed cheaper price than if you played all those events that come in that package at regular prices, fees go towards the prize money pool fund

the table fee or admin fee or registration fee goes toward maintenance and upkeep to the tables brought in to the tournament to keep them at a standard minimum high level of play necessary for tournament play , plus it pays for the labor for the tables and staff as well, and dont forget the table "parts" ,sometimes it may not cover 100% ,but its to help defray the large costs of putting on a tournament

hope that helps a little :)
