Speed techniques/practice
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:38:33 PM »
I have been playing foos for about 1 1/2 years. I bought a Storm II about 8 months ago. I was pretty quick with my shots (push/pull) before and then I took a couple of months off and my speed is just not there anymore. It seems when I try to shoot like I used to, I spray more often than not. Are there any practicing techniques etc. that help with the speed and accuracy of a shot (push/pull)?

well now i'm no tournament pro but i was haveing the same problem
i slowed down and just tryed to hit the shot and then worked back into
my speed that helped me. also you might need to change handles our
even the balls can make a differnce . like i said i'm no pro but that helped me

My advice is to set the ball back a bit, and to *** your mans foot a bit higher. Does that make sense to you. Like you are lifting your foot a touch higher in your back stoke. Setting the ball back will help with the squaring off of the ball.
One more thing... Spotting holes is way more important than speed. You could have a very slow pull and still score if you are looking right.

if you're sure that you're shooting the centre of the ball and you're still spraying, then either
1)  pass slower
2)  shoot harder

that should remove the spraying

i suggest that you should practice faster (lateral speed) then normal....way faster then you would normaly shoot, then once you do that for a little while try it slow it makes it easier for me...i have been shooting a pull for some time and that is the one thing that helps me...

Practice splits. If you start with the first hole and go to middle after that and then 3/4, long will come naturally. Having quit on and off a few different times over the years, I find this is the easiest way back to "Your" shot rather than changing your stance or ball position. Now if you have never had a good straight pull then try the above ideas.

The key to eliminating spray is the recoil.  Ideally on a pull the center man will trace a backward J pattern: pulling across to where you are going to shoot, but then pushing back the other direction through the shot.  The ball must be behind the rod when you hit it to get a good recoil, ideally pretty far back (but obviously in front of where you would pin it instead of shooting it).

Try practicing your shot focusing on having the 3-rod wind up back near where it started (start against the far wall, pull over near the near wall, finish almost against the far wall) to get the idea.  It's a similar concept to a brush pass.

It should feel kind of like cracking a whip when you hit it right.
