Old Tornado Not as Sticky
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:05:02 PM »
I have an older coin op Tornado, probably almost 20 years old?  When I try to catch the ball with my forwards, it just slides out from under me (and it's also a much faster game play due to the type of wood I assume.) I originally assumed it was the plastic players getting old. I replaced them and the same issue persists. So it must be the surface. Is there a way to resurface a table? Is there anything I can do or am I out of luck?
Thanks
Nolan

Can you post a picture of your table? Something doesn't sound right...

Sorry.  I am not good and this video makes it look like I am the worst.  I was just trying to exemplify the issue.

Thank you guys for your quick responses.

I know I am not sticking the ball under the tip of my toe, but every other Tornado I play on, it will stick about where I was hitting it in this video.

Is that a grey marble? If so I have one and the playfield does seem it is not as grippy as the other Tornados I have played on (using red balls). However I inspected the playfield of a cherry/brown coin op and the playfield looked and felt that it was made from the same material and same texture (weird).  If anyone has any ideas or knows  anything about this I would like to know too.

It's probably just the nature of the table. My grey marble is pretty slippery compared to other tables. Probably not worth replacing the playfield so you may just be stuck with it. I see that as an advantage though. If I can catch everything on my table, catching on grippier tables is a snap...

yes you can resurface a table..but it's fairly expensive both time and money wise.   Sorta puts you in the used market for a newer coin or tournament table.  Just out of curiosity I'm wondering what kind of cleaner(s) you have used on the surface?

Is it easy to replace the playfield? , as in just unscrew the old and install a new one?

Use a 50/50 mix of 409 and ammonia.  Cleans all the grime off the table, and leaves the original surface, just cleaner.

ya I was thinking there might be a silicone film or other lubricant/cleaner residue on the surface...409 is the factree recommendation

Thanks for the tips. I will give mine a good clean this weekend. Although i am in the U.K and they do not have 409 cleaner here.
