What to do when you are being lucked out?
« on: October 14, 2006, 08:32:32 AM »
Just wondered what you guys think and feel when bad luck seems to be the only luck avaliable.

Played last night at a local DYP and in a game race to 7 lost 7-6 all 6 of my pairs goals were clean, and 6 of their 7 were filth. Typical goal was, shot, men, walls and more men then in. They didnt gloat they were apologising but it really got to my partner who was in defence, and the mor eit got to him the more lucky they got.

This team then had the same result against another team who on paper are far better.

Any advice on how to change things up and stop the "luck" happening!

Consider "expecting it to happen"....
Odds are that if you are still trying to "control it" or "stop it".... you are not expecting it... then you get into the "overthinking" or "overanalyzing" it and why it happens to you.

Slop happens!  Expect it... then after a slop point... you won't give it another thought and you'll be more focused on playing your best NEXT POINT!      I'd like to think in the grand scheme of things the slop/luck will balance out amongst teams.   So... you'll get your lucky points too.   Focus on the things you can control and chalk up the luck (regarless of which team it benefits) to foos charma or something.

Cheers Jim, thanks for the reply!

I suppose all you can do is chalk it up to luck. The annoying thing for me was how my partner got affected, he was getting so so tense.

Yes,   it happens. Folks at work look at me crazy when I fail to chalk up a point I scored but didn't "earn." However, at a local tournament on a coin-op you really don't have a choice. I always apologize for slop and express my preference for an intended shot. I think at one time or another we have all had this happen or did it to someone else. Like Jim said " Expect it" and get over it and no matter what side of the table your on, be a good sport about it. Folks will respect you for it.

alot of times keeping your back goalie man tilted at a back angle next to the corner of the goal that the ball is headed towards will stop alot of those shots, and prevent the ball from going in "the back door" when it bounces off the wall and into the back of your guy and in the goal.

This is never a problem, always a gent roundt he table.

I expect luck and can cope with it in small amounts, BUT never seen that before in the 18 months ive been playing!

They beat your team, and then went on to beat another team?Did you you get any pointers from them?Im only kidding. But really I look at it this way, looking back on the games I have lost to slop/luck, I have to be brutally honest and say it was because I failed to control the ball. You know as well as I do that that the dominant players in a foosball game are the ones who control the ball(pass-catch-execute the shot). The truth is,they would not have the chance to slop one in if I or my partner had not coughed up the ball.So...now during practice sessions I spend as much time passing and catching as I do shooting.

thats a fair point. Most the goals came from their 2 after they had saved or I had missed.

You can increase your own luck factor by hitting the ball harder.  Also, aim for the edges of the opponent's men, so that the ball will richochet around where it might accidently bounce into the hole.

Yeah you cant lose to slop if you dont give them the ball in the first place. Every time I lose because of slop I get mad at myself because if I had passed and scored 100% then I would not have lost. If someone truly gets "lucky" then you passed and scored every time you got the ball and still lost. If not then it wasnt just luck!
